Kitchen Remodeling Resources - Kitchen Accent Wall

Remodeling Resources - Accent Wall When designing a kitchen, we cannot stress enough the importance of color. Many people are scared of color (are you?). Many homeowners feel white is the best option, and an off white is a daring choice. Color is great, and it is especially important to think about during your kitchen remodel. You want a color that accents your cabinets and your new amenities but doesn't drown out the kitchen. We suggest picking up a color that is subdued enough to let your new kitchen shine then painting one wall as an accent wall for even more interest.

If you are not familiar with the terminology, an accent wall is a wall that is painted a different color then the rest of the walls. In the picture above, the accent wall is gray where the other walls are an off white. Accent walls add interest and perspective to any room. When choosing an accent color, try to pull out a color from the tones that are already in your kitchen. For instance, if you have granite with a light blue streak in it, consider a muted blue tone on an accent wall that matches the cabinet. If you have a mosaic or backslash behind your stove, pull a hue out of there and use that as an accent.

Another important consideration is your cabinets and how to accent them properly. If you have white cabinets, you don't want to use white as an accent color because the room will be so drowned in white there will be no accent! Consider a shade that keeps the room interesting while adding to its drama by stealing a bit of the glory from the cabinets. White cabinets, how about a black accent wall? Well, maybe not that extreme but you get the idea.

The accent wall should be compromised of complimentary shades and hues that accent the room. Try to pull out a color that's already in the room while still adding interest. Muted shades work well but don't be scared to let your imagination run free. If you are remodeling your kitchen yourself, you are the designer so do what makes you happy!
